A Day at Nimba Nature Care Village

By: - October 28, 2016

This blog has been contributed by the guest blogger: by Pradeep Chamaria

It was our first day at Nimba Nature Care Village and we were here for the First Bloggers Meet organised by Ayurveda Sutra.

I have talked about Nimba in my earlier post. Please have a look here

We were here at Nimba for a two day meet; an attempt by Ayurved Sutra and Nimba to bring us closer to Nature and help us learn ways to treat our own bodies with more care.

Here I m going to talk about the Therapies I experienced as part of the Dincharya while at Nimba.

At the Therapy center I met Dr.Joy for consultation and after thoroughly examining me; he prescribed the Therapies that I was to undergo. I was prescribed Raaga Therapy, Reflexology, Detox Therapy, Mud Pack therapy, complete body massage, Janu Vasti (Knee treatment) , and a hydro treatment for my spinal problems.

Everyone in the team was similarly given consultations and prescribed separate treatments depending on his/her body needs. The therapy session was divided into two parts and we had a wellness lunch break in between.

To begin with I was guided to the Audio Room for the Raaga Therapy. Here I relaxed on an arm chair and a pre-defined soft, soothing musical piece was played which thoroughly had me relaxed in minutes and I almost dozed off by the end of the session. This was a wonderful experience, whatever stress I had let in my body of the last nights flight and early morning getting up had vanished.

To continue on, I moved into the Reflexology chamber now and my feet now got a therapy which they loved so immensely and made my entire body feel light.

On to the major therapies now and I moved upstairs in the center and was welcomed by the staff there. Immediately I was made to lie down on a relaxing bed and a mud pack was placed on my head; immediately two expert hands started treating my chest and abdomen area with alternate cold and hot towels. This 15-minute therapy with mudpack left me totally re-energized.

And this was it for the time being and I moved to the restaurant to enjoy some healthy food. Quickly returning to the Therapy center for the next procedure, I once again went through the mud-pack therapy to get me back into the stream. And my expert therapist in the meanwhile prepared the material for Janu Vasti treatment for my knee.

My therapist then massaged my right knee for a while to make it relax and red and then applied a herbal paste to make a circle on my knee. He then filled up the circular area with medicated luke warm oil, which was retained on the knee region for a about 20 minutes. The temp of the oil was maintained throughout the entire procedure.

After removing the oil and the herbal paste, my knee was then given infra red heating for about 5 minutes to further relax the knee area. It really was a rejuvenating treatment for my knee and I felt relaxed.

Similar infra red heat was also given to my lower back area – particularly the T3 and T4 area to get the area a little relaxed before the full body massage that I was going to get next.

Two expert hands now started applying warm medicated oil to my entire body along with rhythmic strokes for the next 30 minutes and then I went in to experience a new treatment for my back.

I was made to lie on a ceramic tub which has a pipe fitted with holes. As I tugged myself into the slot, warm water jets started relaxing my spinal cord. The water was too hot and it was getting uncomfortable – so I got the heating level low and my backbone then enjoyed this wonderful feeling for the next 15 minutes.

The entire afternoon session of pampering has made me feel so relaxed that I now just wanted to go and have a quick nap. But then my body was full of oil and smelling because of the medicated oils. So I was now taken to the steam room and following the traditional steam methods. Though it was quite a hot and humid weather at Nimba, the steam felt comfortable on my body. After about 5 minutes as I sweated a lot and couldn’t bear the steam heat any longer, I was directed to the shower room where I completely removed the oil from my hairs and body.

At Nimba they were not using any herbal mixture like powdered mix of Moong dal to remove the oil from my body. I reported and suggested the management about this and was given assurance that they soon will start using such herbal mixtures instead of the soap.

Well, it was a fantabulous experience. My body felt like as if it still was young. Once out in the Nimba campus, I once again faced the scorching sun. But after this amazing treatment, even sun was not that troublesome to my rejuvenated body and soul.

About Janu Vasti

It is a very simple and effective treatment for people who have knee pain and stiffness caused due to osteoarthritis, old age, knee injury etc. Specially prepared warm herbal oil is poured over the affected knee joint and retained inside a circular compartment made with an herbal paste.

The treatment relieves pain and stiffness and eases movements at the knee joint. It also strengthens the joint, muscles and soft tissues around, improves circulation and enables you to resume back your work and activities.

After the oil and the circular compartment is removed, normally a hot fomentation through hot water bottles or some other heating form is recommended. This gives an astonishing relief.

Normally this treatment is advised for 5 to 7 days as per the requirements of the patient for a complete relief. It is one of the best and most popular remedy available for acute or chronic knee pain. It works wonders and is a magical treatment for relief from the pain and stiffness associated with knee pain.

The term Janu Vasti has 2 terms, Janu meaning Knee joint and Vasti means to hold (compartment which holds). Janu Vasti means a treatment in which medicated oils are poured and pooled for a fixed duration of time in a compartment or a cabin constructed around the knee joint / joints.

In simple words, we can say that Janu Vasti is pain relieving oil-pooling treatment conducted for knee pain caused due to many causes.

Janu Vasti is highly beneficial for:

  • Osteoarthritis of knee joint,
  • Iliotibial band syndrome,
  • Osgood-Schlatter Disease,
  • Patello-femoral pain syndrome (Chondromalacia patellae),
  • Loose bodies in the knee joint,
  • Runner’s knee,
  • Knee injuries like ACL (Anterior cruciate ligament), MCL, and LCL,
  • Torn Meniscus,
  • Knee Bursitis,
  • Patellar tendonitis,
  • Untreated Old (chronic) knee injury,
  • Sprained ligaments,
  • Cartilage tears.

Rise like a Phoenix at NIMBA Nature Cure

Rise like a Phoenix at NIMBA

Rise like a Phoenix at NIMBA Nature Cure

By: - October 21, 2016

This blog has been contributed by the guest blogger: by Nidhi Rohit

Ever heard about Phoenix, a bird in Greek mythology? A bird that rises from its own ashes; a rejuvenating stay at NIMBA is all this and much more, treatments and therapies here will reverse the ill effects of the stressful city life and you will rise and shine like this legendary bird once again, ready to take off

Wellness is a state of mind and being. The source of joy and happiness comes from being one with nature, being connected with oneself and realising that we are a part of this cosmos gives a joy that is beyond any worldly delight.

Nature has been a source of inspiration for me, ever since I remember. (Watch my YouTube video) Those chirping birds, leaves rustling when the wind blows, that touch of cool breeze on your face and the music that raindrops create is unbelievable; only nature has the power to touch you deep within like no one else, after all you are also a part of nature. It was this love of being connected with my inner self through nature that prompted me to take the trip to NIMBA Nature Cure Village in Mehsana, Ahmedabad organized by AyurvedSutra.

Once you realise that this body is the best ever machine made by God you will perhaps take better care of it. City life has made us all more like robots who feel but don’t feel, who know but don’t know and who understand but don’t understand. The cities we live in are best described as concrete jungles where now people are struggling to breathe fresh, clean air the most basic necessity that is required to stay alive. What have we reduced ourselves to? A machine that lives to make money and then tries to save itself from the hazards of this stressful city life using the same money. How ironic!

I like to escape as soon as I can in the lap of Nature and like to keep things simple and basic – Simplicity you see takes away a lot of worries and stress and connects to a higher being. Don’t believe me! Try it once at least, I would say. As you enter NIMBA located on Baliyasan Ahmedabad – Mehsana Express way just outside Ahmedabad you realise that you would be enveloped in the arms of Nature and would be treated like a part of Nature where everything is curable through a way of life following Naturopathy, Ayurvedic and Yogic ways –NIMBA is a drugless wellness center.

Remember when you were born you were a perfect body. OK, so you don’t remember when you were born but you would know for sure that when a human being is born God gives a perfect body which is complicated from inside but each part has its defined function and each organ does its duty as prescribed. As we grow we get so busy with our lives that we take our bodies for granted and feed it all the junk we can and to top it all the pollution of the big cities plays havoc with our lives.

When we read about rishis and yogis we realise that they lived with bare minimum facilities yet were always in the best of their health. To get a firsthand feel of how just being back to basics could help me with lifestyle disorders that I am myself suffering from I thought NIMBA is the best place to be and as I entered NIMBA a large white statue of Buddha with water flowing all over it just took my breath away – so relaxing and so calm.

Is the inner world really that tranquil I thought to myself? And as I explored NIMBA over the next two days I realised that Buddha was a very much a part of NIMBA in the form of statues, wall paintings etc. I didn’t read much into it though, but the very presence of meditating Budhha gave me a feel of relaxation and peace.

What is NIMBA?

NIMBA Nature Cure is western India’s largest Naturopathy Centre that offers holistic treatments in Naturopathy, Ayurveda, Panchkarma, Yoga and meditation, diet and nutrition, physiotherapy and number of hydrotherapies some of which I think are available only at NIMBA.

Here you will be under the guidance of well qualified doctors and trained therapists go under treatments as prescribed with diet to help you cleanse from inside out.

Accommodation and Food

Spread over 100 acres of land NIMBA has rooms numbered alphabetically from A-Z and each unit has three double bedrooms that gives space to each person staying at NIMBA whether as a family or a couple or even by himself. With all the modern amenities available you are just required to concentrate on your health and the daily routine as prescribed by the resident doctors and therapists.

As the property is huge, there are golf carts and bicycles available to commute inside the premises in case you don’t feel like walking. I tried cycling and it was fun, sort of revisiting my childhood when we used to cycle for fun.

Food at NIMBA is something that you should be prepared for. Don’t expect anything fancy, everything is prepared keeping in view your health, is very basic and without any drama but it definitely is tasty and like they say in NIMBA ‘Food is your medicine’ hence you are supposed to eat to help you cure and not just live to eat like we normally do. During my stay there I was a little off the balance at first because I did not even get my morning cuppa which is like the most important thing to keep me going through the day, what I got instead was herbal tea. But then when the going gets tough , the tough get going. Ain’t it?

Nimba Nature Cure Village

Therapies

There are a more than 40 therapies on offer at NIMBA and each person is recommended therapies after a consultation with the doctors on board. Once my consultation was done with Dr. Arun Upendram G, I was advised a couple of therapies like Potli Massage, Jacuzzi, Reflexology and Raga therapy.

Potli Massage took away all the stress and pain from my body and I felt rejuvenated and so relaxed that I could just sleep for hours, then Jacuzzi relaxed me even further and felt so weightless in water that I was floating even while sitting in the Jacuzzi tub. So therapeutic and calming it was. I also had the reflexology done and it was like my feet were thanking me for having thought of them like an important part of the body and treat them to reflexology because the best they know is a pedicure that too at a parlour which is more from a beauty point of view.

Then Raga therapy was something that I had never tried before – how music can be a cure for stress, I realized after a session of Raga Therapy. Hydroreflexology was another therapy that was so relaxing – its two concentric circles one is laid down with cobbled white stones while the other is filled with water which has alternate section of hot and cold water and the person is advised to walk alternatively in the stone section and the water section. It completely takes away any tiredness you feel in your legs.

More to NIMBA than meets the eye

With the 100 acre property you can enjoy the bounties of Nature but besides being a haven for nature lovers and the wonderful array of treatments, NIMBA also has Yoga and Meditation center, Kriya and therapy center (where I tried Jal Neti), Recreation centre and Meditation Caves, Herbal Garden and Organic Farms, Cycling and Jogging track with piped music so wherever you are you can listen to soothing and relaxing music, well equipped cardio gym, swimming pool, amphitheatre, wellness shop and unisex saloon, concierge and laundry service and beautiful gazebos and waterfalls dot the entire property. I went on a tour to the organic farms which are again spread over a huge area of land and according to the care taker provide for the vegetables and other organic produce at NIMBA.

So the next time you are looking to unwind, relax or just detox you should head to NIMBA and just give yourself in to the power of Nature.

P.S. We were invited on this FAM trip organised by AyurvedSutra but the views expressed here are entirely ours and true to our knowledge.

Swine flu (h1n1 flu) – Symptoms and Prevention

Symptoms & Prevention of Swine flu (h1n1 flu)

Swine flu (h1n1 flu) – Symptoms and Prevention

By: - October 14, 2016

Swine flu (swine influenza) is a respiratory disease caused by viruses (influenza viruses) that infect the respiratory tract of pigs, resulting in nasal secretions, a barking cough, decreased appetite, and listless behavior. Swine flu produces most of the same symptoms in pigs as human flu produces in people. Swine flu can last about one to two weeks in pigs that survive. Swine influenza virus was first isolated from pigs in 1930 in the U.S. and has been recognized by pork producers and veterinarians to cause infections in pigs worldwide. In a number of instances, people have developed the swine flu infection when they are closely associated with pigs (for example, farmers, pork processors), and likewise, pig populations have occasionally been infected with the human flu infection. In most instances, the cross-species infections (swine virus to man; human flu virus to pigs) have remained in local areas and have not caused national or worldwide infections in either pigs or humans. Unfortunately, this cross-species situation with influenza viruses has had the potential to change. Investigators decided the 2009 so-called “swine flu” strain, first seen in Mexico, should be termed novel H1N1 flu since it was mainly found infecting people and exhibits two main surface antigens, H1 (hemagglutinin type 1) and N1 (neuraminidase type1). The eight RNA strands from novel H1N1 flu have one strand derived from human flu strains, two from avian (bird) strains, and five from swine strains.

Swine Flu Symptoms

People who have swine flu can be contagious one day before they have any symptoms, and as many as 7 days after they get sick. Kids can be contagious for as long as 10 days.

Most symptoms are the same as seasonal flu. They can include:

  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • stuffy or runny nose
  • Body aches
  • Headache
  • Chills
  • Fatigue

Like seasonal flu, swine flu can lead to more serious complications, including pneumonia and respiratory failure. And it can make conditions like diabetes or asthma worse. If you have symptoms like shortness of breath, severe vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness, or confusion, call your doctor right away.

Prevention of Swine Flu

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends flu vaccination for all people older than 6 months of age. An H1N1 virus is one component of the seasonal flu shot for 2013-2014. The flu shot also protects against two or three other influenza viruses that are expected to be the most common during the 2013-2014 flu season.
The vaccine will be available as an injection or a nasal spray. The nasal spray is approved for use in healthy people 2 through 49 years of age who are not pregnant.

These measures also help prevent swine flu (H1N1 flu) and limit its spread:

  • Stay home if you’re sick.
If you do have swine flu (H1N1 flu), you can give it to others starting about 24 hours before you develop symptoms and ending about seven days later.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly and frequently.
Use soap and water, or if they’re unavailable, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Flu viruses can survive for two hours or longer on surfaces, such as doorknobs and countertops.
  • Contain your coughs and sneezes.
Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough. To avoid contaminating your hands, cough or sneeze into a tissue or the inner crook of your elbow.
  • Avoid contact.
Stay away from crowds if possible. And if you’re at high risk of complications from the flu — for example, you’re younger than 5 or you’re 65 or older, you’re pregnant, or you have a chronic medical condition such as asthma — consider avoiding swine barns at seasonal fairs and elsewhere.
  • Reduce exposure within your household.
If a member of your household has swine flu, designate only one household member to be responsible for the ill person’s personal care.

Tests for Swine Flu

It’s hard to tell whether you have swine flu or seasonal flu, because most symptoms are the same. People with swine flu may be more likely to feel nauseous and throw up than people who have seasonal flu. But a lab test is the only way to know for sure. Even a rapid flu test you can get in your doctor’s office won’t tell you for sure.

Naturopathic Migraine Treatment

Naturopathic Migraine Treatment

Naturopathic Migraine Treatment

By: - October 7, 2016

Migraine headaches are caused by excessive dilation of the cerebral blood vessels, though scientists do not fully understand what causes the dilation in the first place. Blood vessels don’t just dilate spontaneously—they are presumably responding to chemical changes that are occurring in the body. A Naturopathic physician or holistic medical doctor will want to take a complete medical, family, menstrual, and diet history before considering the cause of migraine. Some of the illnesses to be ruled out are bowel problems, mold allergies, vitamin deficiencies, hypertension, TMJ misalignment, food allergies or intolerances, dehydration, spinal subluxations, coffee/caffeine intoxication, and aspartame (Nutrasweet, Equal) toxicity among others. All of these problems can cause migraine symptoms and usually can be treated very easily without the use of drugs. Paradoxical as it may seem, a surprising percentage of migraine headaches may be caused by migraine medication. The “rebound effect” of analgesic and ergotomine compounds has been implicated as a contributing factor for sufferers of daily headaches. Discuss this phenomenon with your prescribing doctor if you are taking more than 30 analgesic tablets a month or if you regularly use ergotamine derivatives. Withdrawal from these products can temporarily make headaches worse, but eliminating these products altogether may ultimately mean no more headaches —ever.

How & What You Eat Can Cause Migraines?

When exploring the causes of headaches, the easiest place to start is diet. Food reactions are a significant contributor to headaches and some improvement in symptoms, if not complete remission, can always be achieved by eliminating problematic dietary items. The elimination/challenge trial described below is a good way to identify food reactions that may be causing your headaches.

Foods that most commonly induce migraines:

  • Cow’s milk
  • Wheat
  • Chocolate
  • Egg
  • Orange
  • Benzoic acid
  • Cheese
  • Tomato
  • Tartrazine (yellow food dye)
  • Rye

Foods like cheese, beer, and wine induce migraines in some people because they contain histamines and/or vasoactive compounds that cause blood vessels to expand. Women tend to react to histamine-containing foods more frequently than men do, on account of a deficiency in an enzyme (diamine oxidase) that breaks histamine down. Taking supplemental B6 may be helpful in these situations, as it can increase diamine oxidase activity.Nitrites, which are common ingredients in lunch meats and smoked/cured meats, dilate blood vessels, and may trigger migraine.

Nutritional Supplements for the Relief of Migraines

Wobenzyme: 5 tablets 3 times a day between meals; or, if this dose causes loose stools, 3 tablets 5 times a day
Magnesium citrate: 250mg to 500mg 3 times a day with meals
Vitamin B6: 25mg 3 times a day with meals; vitamin B6 supports the enzymatic breakdown of histamine.
5-HTP (5- Hydroxytryptophan): 100mg to 200mg 3 times a day; 5-HTP increases seritonin and endorphin levels in the brain and has been shown to be as effective as commonly used migraine drugs and with none of the side effects.

Physical Medicine for Migraines

  • Submerge the feet in a bucket of very hot water while applying an ice compress to the back of the neck. This actually draws the blood down to the feet away from the head. Reduction of pain coincides with the duration of application
  • Acupressure can be helpful. See a trained acupressure therapist for instructions on procedures to do at home.
  • Chiropractic adjustments and maintaining correct spinal alignment can be very supportive in the prevention of headaches that are triggered by muscle stress and spasm.
  • Miscellaneous Treatment Options for Migraines
  • Intravenous magnesium: IV magnesium can be very helpful for migraine patients who have low-grade magnesium deficiencies. Physician monitoring is needed for this procedure.
  • Biofeedback therapy: Look for a certified biofeedback practitioner to learn how to reduce pain with a relaxation response that is as effective as Inderol without the side effects.
  • TENS Unit: Electrical nerve stimulation units can reduce muscle spasm in patients with tension and migraine headaches. A health care practitioner’s prescription is needed for insurance coverage of these units, which should be available through medical supply companies. Some chiropractors and physical therapists loan these devices out to patients for a small deposit.
  • Acupuncture: Acupuncture can balance underlying hormonal deficiencies, tone the gastrointestinal system, and calm reactive blood vessels

    When to Seek Professional Help

If you experience frequent or severe migraines despite trying various treatments and lifestyle changes, it’s important to consult with a healthcare professional. Migraines can sometimes be a symptom of an underlying condition that requires specialized treatment. Seek medical advice if:

  • Migraines are disabling: If your migraines interfere with daily activities or quality of life.
  • Migraines are accompanied by unusual symptoms: Such as vision changes, speech difficulties, or severe nausea.
  • Current treatments are ineffective: If your current migraine management strategies are not providing relief.

Naturopathy Treatment For Weight Loss & Obesity

Naturopathy treatment for weight loss is an interesting topic. The global figure is changing. Being overweight is primarily an issue of health. Excess weight in terms of complementary medicine is seen as an excess condition of toxicity that needs to be eliminated. Did you know that central obesity is as much linked to cardiovascular disease as cigarette smoking?

However there is no ad campaign telling us that fast food will lead to gangrene, although it can. Obesity is associated with complications in pregnancy, heart disease, late onset diabetes and certain cancers, in particular those related to oestrogen and the gastrointestinal tract.

People often have an excuse as to why they are overweight. Age, menopause, slow metabolism, child bearing, convenience and big bones, are some excuses people use. From a naturopathic perspective, there are legitimate reasons why people may gain weight that can be identified and addressed.

Why only Diets Don’t Work

Naturopathic Causes Weight Gain and Obesity

Naturopathic Treatment of Obesity-Weight Loss :- Principles

Naturopathy considers obesity to be less about diet and more about correcting underlying imbalance through lifestyle change that requires a plan of care that supports long-term sustainable health optimization. The Naturopathic Treatment of Obesity-Weight Loss works on six Principles of Naturopathy.

Conclusion

Naturopathic practice is oriented to facilitate patient self-healing and use the clinical encounter as an opportunity to inspire and guide patients to develop a healthier lifestyle. Treatment of obesity is a frequent focus of Naturopathy practice. While single therapeutic agents undergone testing in research trials, to date there has been no whole-system study that supports the effectiveness of naturopathic medicine for obesity. Yet, the naturopathic philosophy of the healing, including the focus on treating the whole person and preventative care suggest that it is ideally suited for the treatment and prevention of obesity.

Wheat Grass Juice – A Miracle Medicine

Wheat Grass Juice

Wheat Grass Juice – A Miracle Medicine

By: - September 21, 2016

The Wheat grass Juice – A Miracle Medicine. The chief constituent of wheat grass is chlorophyll which contains “concentrated sun power”. Chlorophyll increases the function of the heart, affects the vascular system, the intestines, the uterus and the lungs. It is a rich source of vitamin A, B, C and contains minerals like calcium, iron, magnesium, sulfur, cobalt and zinc. It purifies the blood due to its high vitamin and mineral contents and its properties are used to cleanse and rebuild it.

Skin Diseases

Chlorophyll arrests growth and development of harmful bacteria. Wheat grass therapy can thus be effectively used for skin diseases and ulcerated wounds. By retarding bacterial action, it promotes cell activity and normal growth. Regular drinking of wheat grass juice creates an unfavorable environment for bacterial growth.

Digestive System Disorders

Wheat grass juice used as an enema helps detoxify the walls of the colon. The general procedure is to give an enema with lukewarm water. After waiting for 20 minutes, an enema of wheat grass juice is given of about 100 to 125 ml and it should be retained for 15 minutes. This enema is very helpful in disorders of the colon, mucus and ulcerative colitis, chronic constipation and bleeding piles.

Circulatory Disorders

The chlorophyll content present in wheat grass enhances the heart and lung functions. Capillary activity also increases, while toxemia is reduced. Iron content in the blood increases the hemoglobin, and the lungs function better. Oxygenation improves and the effect of carbon dioxide is minimized. Wheat grass juice is thus highly beneficial in the treatment of circulatory disorders.

Other Diseases

Several other diseases can be treated successfully by regular drinking of Wheat grass juice. These include premature greying and falling of hair, debility, abdomen pain, constipation, tooth disorders, arthritis, psoriasis, general weakness, kidney stones, weak eyesight, asthma, and insomnia.

How To Grow & Use Wheat Grass

Wheat grass can be grown in any sheltered place and where the temperature is mild. The direct rays of the sun have a tendency to sap the strength from the grass.

For growing wheat grass, a good variety of wheat should be soaked for 8 to 10 hours. The water should then be drained and these grains should be allowed to sprout for 15 hours. Earthen pots or wooden trays can be used to grow the wheat grass. They should be filled with compost manure and the wheat sprouts should be spread. They should be sprinkled with water once or twice a day and allowed to stay as such for six to seven days until the grass grows five to seven inches high. The grass can be cut with a scissors. It should be immediately washed and ground. Thereafter, the juice of the ground pulp should be extracted through a fine piece of cloth. The juice so extracted should be taken immediately, as its efficacy reduces every minute and the medicinal value is completely lost after three hours.

Wheatgrass is called a “miracle medicine” for good reason.
